Anal Sex Myths {De-Bunked}
It seems there are a lot of myths surrounding the topic of anal sex; it’s painful, men want it more than us women, women who love it are dirty. The list goes on and on, which leads to a misconception that the only people who love it are men having sex with men, and this couldn’t be further from the truth.
Anal sex is still somewhat of a taboo topic in mainstream conversation and, as far as I’m concerned, it’s not talked about enough. Which brings me to 5 anal sex myths (de-bunked):
Myth #1 – It’s Not Natural
Anal sex is completely normal and natural. It is NOT perverted or dirty. If anal sex is something you enjoy, or you’re curious about, then I encourage you to go ahead and do it. People have been enjoying pleasurable anal sex for thousands of years. Don’t believe me? Check out the erotic sculptures at the Khajurao Temples in India (pictured above).
Myth #2 – Women don’t like it
Many women love anal sex. Anal sex can be extremely pleasurable and erotic and the fact that it’s somewhat taboo can be part of the appeal and turn on. Now I’m not saying all women love it, because we are all very unique and different, but if you’re curious, and you enjoy it, that’s perfectly normal and natural. Embrace your love of anal sex and let go of the misconception that you’re not supposed to like it.
Myth #3 – It’s painful
Anal sex doesn’t have to be painful. If you’re relaxed, and using plenty of lube, then anal sex can take pleasure to a whole new level. Hint: Anal sex is all about relaxing your mind and body. Take a moment right now to practice; physically tighten the muscles in your anus by squeezing your butt muscles and then relaxing them. Now remember this exercise when you go to try anal; the moment before penetration, consciously relax your mind and anus and you will notice a whole lot more pleasure and enjoyment. Also, try different positions, often the traditional ‘doggy’ position just isn’t comfy and reverting back to missionary can make it a whole lot more pleasurable.
Myth #4 – It’s dirty
Lot’s of us think that anal sex is dirty because we’ve been taught from a young age that the anus is all about poo. Fact is, as long as you maintain hygiene, anal sex is not dirty. Hint: Just like any type of sex it’s important to maintain personal hygiene and I definitely do not recommend engaging in anal sex if you need to poo. Timing is essential. Empty your bowels before anal, have a shower and then hop to it with plenty of lube! Keep in mind that sometimes during anal sex you may feel like you ‘need to poo’, because penetrating your anus stimulates the muscles and is a similar feeling.
Myth #5 – It’s gay
If you think it’s just gay men who enjoy anal sex, you’re wrong. Anal sex is for everyone. Many men and women around the world enjoy giving and receiving anal daily (and that doesn’t automatically put them into the ‘gay’ category). Heard of pegging? Pegging is when a woman uses a strap-on on her male partner anally. Many straight men love receiving anally. It’s important to remember that everyone is different and unique when it comes to sex and pleasure and there are definitely no ‘rights’ and ‘wrongs’ when it comes to anal sex.
